Nowitzki Open to Future Mavericks Role, But Not Full-Time

Dirk Nowitzki revealed he has been in contact with new Mavericks president Masai Ujiri, but his current Amazon Prime broadcasting commitments make a full-time role unlikely. He had previously distanced himself from the team after the Luka Doncic trade and the departure of Nico Harrison. Nowitzki said they will eventually meet to discuss a potential relationship with the franchise.

Nowitzki's rift with the Mavericks stems from the organization's handling of longtime athletic trainer Casey Smith and the blockbuster trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers, both orchestrated by former general manager Nico Harrison. Harrison's dismissal in November cleared the way for Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz to assume control of basketball operations, creating an opening for reconciliation.

Nowitzki currently works on Amazon Prime's NBA studio show alongside Blake Griffin, a position requiring extensive travel that he says makes a full-time commitment impractical. He acknowledged exchanging texts with Ujiri over the summer, citing their prior relationship, and expects a formal conversation about a potential advisory or consulting role once his schedule permits.
