Frustrated Applicant Uses ChatGPT to Answer AI Recruiter

After being repeatedly ignored by an AI recruiter named Riley, a job seeker named Christopher used ChatGPT Voice to represent him during a call. The two bots conversed for 10 minutes, with the AI recruiter promising follow-up that never came. The incident highlights the growing absurdity of automated hiring processes.
Christopher, a government contractor whose work vanished amid recent federal cutbacks, has submitted roughly 700 applications over six months, mostly receiving silence. Five of those applications led to calls with Riley, an AI recruiter for Everforth Apex Systems, each ending with promises of human follow-up that never arrived. On the fifth call, he deployed ChatGPT Voice with a brief background prompt, letting the two systems converse for ten minutes. The exchange included a looping discussion about onboarding and background checks, and Riley again pledged contact that never came. Christopher described the cycle as a “slop flywheel,” where synthetic personas exchange meaningless data with no real outcome. Everforth Apex Systems did not respond to requests for comment.
The incident reflects broader trends in hiring: 63 percent of job seekers report encountering AI interviews, while tools like Ribbon now claim to detect AI-assisted candidate responses. Voice AI remains technically challenging, with issues like interrupting candidates or handling filler words, yet recruiters adopt it to manage application floods. Candidates increasingly fight fire with fire, creating a feedback loop where automated systems screen automated responses.
This episode could signal a deepening trust breakdown in hiring, where both sides treat interviews as performative rituals rather than genuine evaluations. Job seekers may feel compelled to use AI just to be heard, while employers risk filtering out authentic candidates and missing human qualities. The result could be a hollow labor market, where qualified people are dismissed by flawed algorithms, and companies lose access to real talent. If left unchecked, this dynamic may erode confidence in the entire recruitment process, leaving both applicants and employers worse off.
