Snow leopard's myth meets climate change in new book
Kulbhushansingh Suryawanshi's The Ghost of the Mountains examines the elusive snow leopard, whose range has contracted to Central Asia's high peaks. The book combines fieldwork anecdotes with the animal's biology and the threats from climate change and human encroachment. It portrays the leopard as a symbol of what we stand to lose in a warming world.
The snow leopard's historical range once extended as far west as Portugal during the Pleistocene, but glacial retreat confined the species to roughly 3 million square kilometres across a dozen Central Asian nations. Its physical adaptations—oversized tails for balance, widened nasal passages for warming thin air, and genetic traits for high-altitude survival—make it uniquely specialized among large carnivores, the only one exclusively mountain-adapted.
Suryawanshi's fieldwork faced extreme conditions: hypothermia, blizzards, and altitude complications, with colleagues lost to heart attacks and unexplained deaths. Before his surveys, under 1 percent of the cat's habitat had been properly studied. In Mongolia's Gobi desert, his team leveraged traditional land rights to help herders establish the Tost-Tosonbumba Nature Reserve, demonstrating that local custodianship proved essential to conservation.
This book could reshape public understanding of climate change by using a charismatic species as an entry point for broader ecological awareness.
