Tape storage shipments rebound sharply as AI fuels demand for archival capacity

Tape storage vendors reported a 57% year-over-year increase in shipped capacity for the first quarter of 2026. The industry shipped 160.3 exabytes in 2025, down slightly from 2024 but still the second-best year on record. AI data center growth, along with demand for archival and cyber-resilient storage, is driving the rebound.
The LTO Program Technology Provider Companies—HPE, IBM, and Quantum—reported that 2025 shipments totaled 160.3 exabytes of compressed tape capacity, a 9% decline from 2024's record 176.5 exabytes but still the second-strongest year ever recorded. The first quarter of 2026 saw a dramatic 57% year-over-year surge, attributed to AI-driven data center expansion, traditional archival workloads, and growing interest in cyber-resilient backup strategies.
Format momentum is being fueled by LTO-9 adoption and early uptake of LTO-10 cartridges, which hold up to 40TB native or 100TB compressed. The roadmap extends to LTO-14, promising 576TB native capacity per cartridge. Quantum CEO Hugues Meyrath framed tape as a strategic component of modern infrastructure, citing predictable economics and resilient long-term retention amid rising energy and cost pressures.
The tape storage rebound could signal a broader shift in how organizations balance cost, energy efficiency, and data protection. As AI workloads generate unprecedented volumes of information, businesses may increasingly view tape as a pragmatic complement to power-hungry disk and flash systems. This trend could affect storage budgets, data center energy consumption, and vendor strategies across the industry.
