Romania Selects Palme d'Or Winner 'Fjord' for Oscar International Feature Race

Romania has chosen Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord' as its official submission for the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards. The film, starring Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan, follows a religious Romanian couple accused of child abuse after relocating to Norway. Having already won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the film automatically qualified for the category under new Academy rules, and is also seen as a potential contender for Best Original Screenplay.

The film's Cannes triumph triggered automatic qualification under revised Academy regulations, making Romania's formal selection somewhat ceremonial. Mungiu's earlier Palme d'Or winner was famously never submitted, generating controversy. His 2012 effort reached the shortlist stage but stalled there.

Reinsve arrives with momentum from "Backrooms" and last year's International Feature winner "Sentimental Value." The film's English-language portions may broaden its appeal. Romania's sole Oscar recognition remains "Collective," which earned nominations in two categories. The shortlist announcement arrives December 15, with nominations following January 21.
