Uber launches limited autonomous taxi service in London with safety drivers
Londoners can now book self-driving taxis through the Uber app, operated by UK firm Wayve, marking the city's first commercial robotaxi service. Only 15 vehicles are licensed, each with a human safety driver ready to take control, and over 100,000 Uber users have already registered for the service. Full driverless operation awaits separate government approval, which is not expected this year.
The service uses modified Ford Mustang vehicles equipped with Wayve's AI Driver system, which learns from real-world driving rather than relying on pre-mapped routes like some competitors. Each taxi carries a licensed safety driver who remains silent during trips but can take control if requested or needed.
Wayve plans to eventually replace the Mustangs with purpose-built Nissan Leaf robotaxis, though the company must first validate safety metrics and secure regulatory approval from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. The current fleet of 15 vehicles is tiny compared to London's 100,000-plus private hire cars, and demand is already high with over 100,000 Uber users registered.
The limited rollout could reshape urban mobility in London if successful, potentially influencing how other cities approach autonomous vehicle regulation. Commuters may gain access to safer, more consistent transport options, while professional drivers could face long-term employment pressure as the technology matures.
