Iowa poll shows Sand ahead in governor race, Hinson leads Senate contest
A new Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey shows Democratic state auditor Rob Sand leading Republican Zach Lahn 49% to 46% in the Iowa governor's race. In the Senate race to replace retiring Sen. Joni Ernst, Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson leads Democrat Josh Turek 50% to 45%. The poll also found about 6% of voters splitting their ticket between Sand and Hinson.
The survey, conducted Aug. 31–Sep. 1 among 750 voters, carries a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.6 points, meaning both races remain within statistical reach. Sand’s lead over Lahn sits at 3 points, while Hinson’s Senate edge is 5 points. Notably, 6% of respondents said they would back Sand for governor and Hinson for Senate, a split-ticket pattern that independent voters drive—they favor Sand by 12 points but are nearly even between Turek and Hinson.
The poll also shows President Trump’s approval in Iowa at 44%, 8 points underwater, though better than his national standing. Cook Political Report recently shifted both races toward Democrats, calling the governor’s race “lean Democratic” and the Senate contest a “toss-up,” citing voter frustration over Trump’s economic policies and data-center support. Republicans have held the governor’s mansion for years, but Sand is the only Democrat in statewide office, giving his party a rare foothold in a state Trump won three times.
This polling suggests Iowa, long a reliably Republican state, may be experiencing a volatile electoral moment where economic discontent and specific policy grievances—like data-center development—cut across party lines. If these margins hold, it could signal that down-ballot races are becoming more competitive even in red states, potentially reshaping campaign resource allocation and national narratives about Democratic viability. However, with both races within or near the margin of error, outcomes remain uncertain, and voter turnout dynamics will likely decide whether this shift is durable or a temporary protest against the incumbent party.
