Robot mowers gain built-in edging capabilities for precise lawn care

At IFA 2026, Anker unveiled the Eufy Robot Lawn Mower S2 Max, which features an extendable trimming arm to cut grass along driveways and flower beds. The dual-blade mower uses camera-based vSLAM navigation to map yards up to 3.7 acres and handle slopes up to 38 degrees, with a European launch set for May 2027 at €3,999. Mammotion also introduced the Luba 4 AWD, which uses an edge-cutting attachment and a multi-camera system with LiDAR and network RTK for trimming against walls and fences.
The edging feature addresses a long-standing limitation of autonomous mowers, which previously left uncut strips along hard surfaces that required manual trimming. Anker's camera-based vSLAM approach eliminates the need for perimeter wires or RTK base stations, simplifying installation for homeowners. Mammotion's Luba 4 AWD instead combines multiple sensor types—cameras, LiDAR, and cloud-based RTK—for redundancy in navigation. The 12000F model, designed for larger properties, notably omits the edger attachment, suggesting the feature is currently prioritized for residential rather than estate-scale use. Both companies join Segway, Ecovacs, and Roborock in adding edging to their lineups, indicating a competitive push toward full lawn-care automation.
These mowers could significantly reduce the time homeowners spend on yard maintenance, particularly the tedious edge-trimming task. The high price points—€3,999 for the Eufy model—may initially limit adoption to affluent households, though competition among brands could drive costs down over time. As robotic mowers handle more complete lawn care, they may also reduce reliance on gas-powered equipment, potentially lowering emissions and noise pollution in residential neighborhoods. However, the camera and sensor systems raise questions about data privacy and long-term reliability that consumers may weigh before purchasing.
