Guild Wars 3 Alpha Glimpse: A Prequel with Action-RPG Combat and Console Debut

ArenaNet gave a brief preview of Guild Wars 3, which is set before the events of the original games. The new momentum engine makes combat feel more like an action RPG, and the game will launch on PlayStation 5 alongside PC. The beta is expected in late 2027, and the developer plans to keep supporting the earlier titles.
The game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and has been in development for four years. ArenaNet's momentum system introduces a stamina bar to limit movement, and combat now allows players to build speed to ram enemies into walls or knock them off ledges. Each class modifies the base movement, with the Warrior able to sprint up walls and slam down for area damage.
The prequel setting means newcomers need no prior knowledge of the series. ArenaNet also confirmed continued support for both earlier titles, including the recently released Guild Wars Reforged with system enhancements and a mobile port. The PlayStation 5 marks the franchise's console debut.
This announcement could reshape expectations for the MMORPG genre, which has traditionally avoided momentum-based mechanics due to technical constraints. If successful, Guild Wars 3 may pressure other developers to innovate beyond static combat systems. The console launch could also expand the franchise's audience significantly, potentially drawing players who never experienced the PC originals. However, the late 2027 beta means the game's impact remains speculative, and ArenaNet's continued support for older titles may ease longtime fans' transition while keeping the community fragmented across three games.
