Court acquits Real Madrid defender in explicit video case
A Spanish court has cleared Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio of involvement in distributing a sexually explicit video involving a minor. Three former academy teammates received suspended sentences and were ordered to attend a sexual re-education course. Asencio also faces separate disciplinary proceedings from Real Madrid over a drink-driving conviction.
The case stemmed from a June 2023 incident at a Gran Canaria beach club, where a sexually explicit video was recorded and shared. The victims, aged 16 and 18, forgave the convicted parties, which contributed to the court handing down minimum sentences. The three convicted former academy players received one-year suspended terms, mandatory sexual re-education classes, restraining orders, and a three-year ban from working with minors.
Asencio's acquittal in that matter stands separate from his drink-driving conviction in August, when he was found more than three times over the legal limit. That offence brought an eight-month licence suspension and a fine, plus internal disciplinary action from Real Madrid. Manager Jose Mourinho expressed displeasure, noting that a player's conduct outside the club still reflects on its prestige, while Asencio publicly apologised and vowed the incident would not recur.
