India's GSLV Mark II lifts off with EOS-05, its first geostationary Earth-observation satellite
India's GSLV Mark II rocket successfully launched the EOS-05 satellite into geosynchronous orbit on September 3, 2026. The 5,218-pound spacecraft is designed for Earth imaging from a high vantage point, marking India's first such mission. The GSLV Mark II stands 170 feet tall and uses three stages, having logged 12 flights since its 2010 debut with 10 successes. Its predecessor, the Mark I, flew six times between 2001 and 2010 but suffered two launch failures. EOS-05 weighs roughly 5,218 pounds and will operate from geosynchronous orbit, approximately 22,236 miles above Earth, where spacecraft match the planet's rotation.
India's previous attempt to place an imaging satellite in this orbit ended in August 2021 when EOS-03 was lost to a third-stage anomaly. The rocket recovered in May 2023 and now carries four straight successful launches. This mission marks India's third orbital flight of 2026, following a January PSLV failure and July's successful Vikram-1 debut.
This launch could significantly strengthen India's ability to monitor its region continuously from a fixed vantage point, potentially aiding disaster response, weather tracking, and border surveillance. Persistent geostationary coverage may benefit civilian sectors like agriculture and infrastructure planning, while also serving strategic purposes.
