Apple Vision Pro aids surgeon in first FDA-authorized hip procedure

The operation was a hip arthroscopy performed at Duke Health by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Chad Mather III. Stryker's SportSuite Vision app received FDA De Novo authorization on July 17, and this procedure marked its first real-world deployment. The headset displayed orthopedic planning tools, arthroscopic imagery, and CT scans within the surgeon's field of view during the operation.
Dr. Mather noted that spatial computing let him arrange clinical information to match his workflow while remaining inside the sterile field. The Vision Pro has faced questions about its intended audience, and reports suggest Apple may have cut a significant portion of its Vision Pro team last month. Still, specialized medical applications like this one illustrate a promising direction for mixed-reality hardware beyond consumer entertainment.
This milestone could signal a shift in surgical practice, potentially making complex procedures more efficient and reducing physical strain on surgeons who currently juggle multiple screens and tools.
