Ted Lasso's Season 4 Debut Draws Record Streaming Audience

Nielsen data shows the first week of 'Ted Lasso' season four generated 866 million minutes of viewing, a 61% increase over its season three premiere. The single new episode released on Aug. 5 accounted for about 312 million minutes. 'The Big Bang Theory' remained the overall most-watched streaming title for a third week.
The season four premiere of Ted Lasso delivered Apple TV's strongest opening-week performance for the series, with Nielsen recording 866 million viewing minutes between Aug. 3-9. The lone new episode released Aug. 5 contributed roughly 312 million of those minutes, representing 36 percent of the weekly figure. This marks a 61 percent jump from the 539 million minutes the season three premiere generated in 2023.
Elsewhere on the charts, The Big Bang Theory maintained its overall streaming lead for a third consecutive week at 1.06 billion minutes, while House of the Dragon climbed to 940 million ahead of its season finale. Netflix's My Life With the Walter Boys topped original series with 896 million minutes, and the film The Last House led movies with 838 million. Nielsen's data tracks U.S. television-set viewing only, excluding mobile and computer usage.
This debut suggests that long gaps between seasons do not necessarily erode audience loyalty for established comedies, which may encourage streaming platforms to greenlight similar returns. The strong performance could also intensify competition among services for proven franchises, potentially shaping how studios prioritize nostalgia-driven revivals over new IP. For viewers, the data reflects broader habits around appointment-style viewing of weekly releases, though the reliance on TV-set metrics means actual engagement may be higher when mobile and computer viewing are factored in.
