Toddler receives rabies shots after contact with infected petting zoo goats
A 4-year-old boy who visited a petting zoo in North Carolina on August 15 has begun rabies post-exposure treatment after three baby goats tested positive for the virus. Health officials are working to trace all visitors who may have had contact with the animals. The boy's mother said he fed the goats during a dinosaur exhibit event.
The infected goats belonged to Farm Adventures, a mobile operation that traveled across North Carolina between late July and late August, appearing at birthday parties, school events, and an assisted living facility. Health officials have not yet determined how many visitors may have been exposed, though the state is coordinating with local agencies to ensure rabies post-exposure treatment is available to anyone who needs it.
The goats were too young for rabies vaccination and are believed to have contracted the virus from a skunk entering their enclosure. Rabies remains nearly universally fatal once neurological symptoms emerge, but prompt vaccination after exposure is highly effective. Nationally, roughly 1.4 million Americans are monitored annually for possible rabies exposure, with about 100,000 receiving preventive shots.
This case could heighten public concern about animal contact at temporary attractions, particularly for families with young children who may not recognize or report bites or scratches. It may also prompt petting zoo operators and event organizers to reassess animal sourcing, vaccination protocols, and enclosure security.
