Guinea-Bissau Approves Constitution Granting President Greater Authority

In a referendum on September 3, Guinea-Bissau voters approved a new constitution with 70% support, significantly expanding presidential powers. The president now has the authority to appoint and dismiss the prime minister and cabinet, create or abolish ministries, and dissolve parliament during serious political crises. The changes come ahead of elections scheduled for December.
