The shift in farmed salmon feed stems from dwindling wild forage fish populations, prompting producers to substitute soy and canola oils. This dietary change directly reduces the accumulation of beneficial fatty acids in the fish flesh. A prior 2016 investigation already flagged this downward trend, and the current USDA-led study reinforces those earlier findings, though its limited sample size means official dietary advice remains unchanged for now.
The broader aquaculture sector has expanded rapidly, with farmed salmon output tripling over two decades to satisfy health-conscious consumers. This growth brings environmental costs, including nutrient pollution from waste and feed, which harms wild salmon and seabird populations. The industry's reliance on marine ingredients also pressures coastal communities that historically depended on small fish.
The findings could undermine public trust in dietary guidelines, potentially altering consumer choices away from farmed salmon toward other protein sources.
