Hydrogen Truck Collaboration Set to Launch in Germany

Toyota and major truck makers will announce a new partnership at the IAA Transportation show. Uniper has completed the first phase of an ammonia import terminal that can supply hydrogen for fuel cell trucks. The initiative aims to reduce Europe's reliance on imported fossil fuels.
The forthcoming German initiative unites major automotive and energy firms to establish a hydrogen fueling network for heavy freight. Uniper's finished first stage at Wilhelmshaven will accept liquid ammonia, converting it into hydrogen on-site, with a maximum capacity equivalent to about 350,000 tons annually. A prior agreement with an Indian producer secures up to 500,000 tons of green ammonia yearly.
Toyota's hydrogen portfolio also spans trains, watercraft, and stationary power, alongside its KINTO mobility services. This development arrives while battery-electric trucks, such as Tesla's Semi, currently dominate the zero-emission freight segment, positioning the new hydrogen ecosystem as a complementary option for long-haul operations.
This collaboration could reshape European freight logistics by offering a long-haul alternative to battery-electric trucks, potentially easing strain on charging infrastructure. It may reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets, but reliance on imported green ammonia introduces new supply chain risks. The initiative's success likely hinges on the cost-competitiveness of green hydrogen and fleet operators' willingness to adopt new fueling networks.
