Infectious disease specialists and Democratic lawmakers are alarmed by a proposal to eliminate a clinical research unit at NIAID and redirect funds to the Pentagon. The plan has a brief comment period and is seen as undermining medical research.
The proposed restructuring, outlined in a brief two-page notice, would dissolve the Division of Clinical Research and several other offices. That division currently oversees regulatory compliance, statistical methodology, and capacity building for intramural trials. Acting Director John Powers III framed the change as aligning with presidential priorities.
The public comment window is limited to five days in mid-September, and the linked informational page offered no substantive details. HIV Medicine Association Chair Anna Person stated that without the full proposal, assessing the impact is difficult, so concerns center on the abbreviated process.
