British volunteer expelled from Israel after settler attack in West Bank
British student Finn Joughin has been deported from Israel following his work protecting Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank. He was kidnapped by Israeli settlers at gunpoint on August 29 after intervening to stop them from disrupting a children's football game in Umm al-Khair. Joughin now faces a 10-year ban from entering Israel.
The 22-year-old volunteer with Proactive Presence was seized after intervening in a dispute over a children's football match in Umm al-Khair. Settlers physically assaulted him, confiscated his belongings, and held him in a bomb shelter at the Carmel outpost while accusing him of anarchism and Iranian connections.
After transfer to a Kiryat Arba police station, he faced insults from soldiers. Though initially suspected of assault, a higher authority ordered his continued custody, culminating in his deportation and a 10-year entry ban. The village is located in Area C, which experiences frequent settler incursions.
This expulsion could discourage international volunteers from assisting Palestinian communities, potentially reducing protective presence in vulnerable areas. It may also heighten diplomatic friction between Israel and Western nations over treatment of foreign nationals.
