Netflix Taps Kirill Sokolov to Direct Sci-Fi Action Film 'Blur'
Kirill Sokolov, known for 'They Will Kill You', is set to direct the sci-fi action movie 'Blur' for Netflix. Shawn Levy's production company 21 Laps will produce the feature.
Sokolov first gained recognition with his 2019 dark crime comedy, which drew comparisons to early Tarantino. After another Russian action film, he relocated to the US and made his English-language debut with a Warner Bros. horror-comedy starring Zazie Beetz. He is represented by CAA and other agencies.
The upcoming Netflix feature centers on a mother-daughter narrative that incorporates teleportation. Sokolov is co-writing a new version with Ellen Shanman, building upon an earlier script by Christy Hall and Dan Casey. Bryan Oh is overseeing the production for 21 Laps.
This collaboration could signal Netflix's ongoing commitment to importing distinct international genre voices into mainstream English-language productions. By pairing a Russian director with a major producer like Shawn Levy, the project may broaden the stylistic range of sci-fi action films. Audiences could see a fresh take on teleportation narratives, while the mother-daughter focus might attract a wider demographic. Additionally, Sokolov's success here may encourage other studios to take similar creative risks.
