Pesticide Poisoning Affects Nearly Half of World's Farmers Annually, Study Finds
A new study commissioned by Pesticide Action Network estimates that between 402 and 433 million farmers and farm workers are unintentionally poisoned by pesticides each year, representing about 46% of the global farming population. The highest incidence was found in Burkina Faso, where nearly 84% of agricultural workers experienced poisoning, and the study also attributes approximately 11,000 annual deaths to pesticide exposure. Researchers urge immediate action, including phasing out highly hazardous pesticides and providing safer alternatives.
The research, published in *Frontiers in Public Health*, analyzed data spanning 2006 to 2023. It highlights that exposure typically occurs during pesticide preparation, application, or contact with treated crops and equipment. Notably, the study's scope excludes the estimated 84 million children engaged in agricultural labor, as well as chronic health effects, focusing strictly on acute poisoning incidents.
Global pesticide consumption has surged, reaching 3.8 million metric tons in 2023—double the 1990 figure. Beyond immediate poisoning, experts point to mounting evidence linking these chemicals to Parkinson's disease, a condition already recognized as an occupational illness for farmers in several European nations. The authors stress the need for standardized global reporting to better track this ongoing crisis.
This staggering prevalence of acute poisoning could reshape agricultural labor practices and regulatory frameworks worldwide. Farmers and farm workers in developing regions, particularly South Asia and West Africa, may face heightened health risks and economic instability due to lost workdays. The findings could pressure governments and agrochemical companies to accelerate the transition toward safer alternatives. Furthermore, the potential link to chronic neurological conditions like Parkinson's may expand occupational health protections, though implementation of such safeguards could vary significantly across different national economies.
