Community mod unlocks DLSS 5 and multi-frame generation for older Nvidia GPUs

A new mod called DLSS Unlocked combines existing tools to enable DLSS 5 and multi-frame generation on RTX 20, 30, and 40 series GPUs. It uses AMD's FSR 3.1 for frame interpolation on older cards, while RTX 40 series uses Nvidia's own frame gen. The mod requires games to support DLSS natively and a patched DLSS 5 DLL.
The DLSS Unlocked utility, developed by ShyVox, packages two separate community tools into one streamlined installer for Windows and Linux systems. Its use is limited to DirectX 12 titles that already include native DLSS upscaling and frame generation, and users must provide a legally obtained, patched DLSS 5 DLL file.
Functionally, the mod routes frame interpolation through AMD's FSR 3.1 on RTX 20 and 30 cards. On RTX 40 hardware, it combines Nvidia's standard frame generation with FSR 3.1 to achieve up to six times the base frame rate. This integration is distinct from the ReShade-based DLSS 5 Swapper, as it requires a game's existing DLSS implementation to function.
This mod could significantly extend the practical lifespan of older RTX graphics cards, allowing users to delay costly hardware upgrades while still accessing advanced rendering features. However, it may also introduce stability risks or performance inconsistencies, given the reliance on hybrid technologies. The restriction against multiplayer use could limit its appeal for many gamers, and the potential for anti-cheat bans remains a concern. Ultimately, this community-driven work may pressure Nvidia to reconsider its software gating policies for previous generations.
