Taiwan travel industry criticizes new registration rules for mainland trips
Taiwan's opposition parties and travel agencies are pushing back against new rules that require travelers to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau to register their trip details. Travel agencies must submit this data or face penalties ranging from NT$10,000 to NT$50,000, with the policy preceding new mainland border rules on September 15.
Opposition KMT politicians argue the DPP is leveraging the measure to heighten cross-strait anxieties before local polls. Industry figures, like operator Lan Hsueh-hua, criticize the burden of being fined for clients who decline to register, describing the operational climate as covert and punitive.
The registration mandate could dampen civilian exchanges by adding administrative friction and legal risk for travel operators, potentially reducing the volume of cross-strait visits. It may also deepen political polarization, as the measure becomes a campaign talking point ahead of local elections.
