Over 1,200 Genetic Variants Linked to Personality Traits

An international consortium analyzed DNA and personality questionnaires from 46 cohorts, identifying more than 1,200 genetic variants associated with the Big Five traits. These variants also correlate with health, longevity, and career outcomes, though individual effects are small and environment remains influential.

Lead author Ted Schwaba emphasized that no single gene dictates personality; individual variants exert minuscule effects, yet their cumulative influence is meaningful. The team validated these associations across diverse demographics, such as young Dutch adults and older US retirees, and used sibling comparisons to rule out purely shared environmental influences.
Beyond traits, the genetic markers overlap with outcomes like physical and mental health, educational attainment, and career paths. Specific connections emerged, linking conscientiousness variants to daytime activity and openness/extraversion variants to nocturnal habits. Furthermore, genes and environment interact; openness variants increased the likelihood of moving to cosmopolitan areas, which could subsequently reinforce that trait.
This research could refine personalized mental health and career counseling, though the tiny individual effects caution against genetic determinism. Employers or insurers may attempt to leverage such genetic profiles, potentially prompting new privacy and discrimination safeguards. Ultimately, the findings may shift public discourse toward a nuanced nature-nurture perspective, emphasizing that while inherited predispositions exist, environmental factors remain powerful and modifiable influences on personality and life outcomes, affecting how individuals, families, and institutions approach personal development.
