Seoul Urged to Supply Air Defense Interceptors to Kyiv
Ukraine's air defense is critically short on interceptors, with only 29 of 195 Russian ballistic missiles downed in July and allied deliveries falling to a third of 2025 levels. South Korea's Cheongung-II system has demonstrated a 96 percent success rate in UAE operations. Its interceptors cost about $1.1 million, roughly one-third the price of a Patriot. Seoul possesses surplus capacity due to its own defense against North Korean threats, yet has so far declined Zelensky's direct appeal for air defense support.
If Seoul reverses its stance, it could materially strengthen Ukraine's ballistic missile defenses, potentially reducing civilian casualties. This move may also reshape European perceptions of South Korea as a reliable security ally, influencing future defense procurement and diplomatic ties.
