Chrome switches to two-week release cycle to speed up security patches and AI features

Google has moved Chrome to a two-week release schedule, down from four weeks, to address faster-moving threats and ship AI features more quickly. The change is also a response to AI-assisted development enabling new browser competitors. Other browsers like Mozilla and Brave are following suit.
The accelerated cadence aims to minimize the window between a vulnerability's public disclosure and its remediation, a metric known as the N-day gap. This is particularly important as automated tools generate a higher volume of patches.
This strategic shift also responds to a surge of AI-powered browser alternatives, such as Brave and Perplexity's Comet, which are leveraging AI-assisted development. Notably, this is not Chrome's first schedule adjustment; it moved to a four-week cycle in 2021 after previously operating on a six-week timeline.
The faster release cadence could significantly reduce the time users remain vulnerable to known exploits, potentially raising the baseline security for the average internet user. However, it may also lead to more frequent update interruptions and increased testing burdens for enterprise IT departments. For smaller browser developers, this shift could intensify competitive pressure, as they must match Chrome's rapid feature delivery to remain relevant.
