GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Hair Loss in Predisposed Men; Semaglutide Helps Obese Children

A Mendelian randomization study suggests men with a genetic predisposition to androgenetic alopecia face a higher risk of hair loss when using GLP-1 medications. In a phase III trial, semaglutide reversed obesity in over 40% of children aged 6 to 11 after 68 weeks. Additionally, smartwatches may significantly overestimate calorie burn during exercise, particularly in individuals with higher body fat.
The hair-loss finding, published in the *Journal of Investigative Dermatology*, emerges amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of GLP-1 products. The FDA recently flagged safety issues with unapproved versions, particularly multidose vials, and recalled a tainted weight-loss supplement containing a toxic pesticide and an antidepressant.
In pediatric care, the STEP Young trial demonstrated that 68 weeks of semaglutide helped over 40% of children aged 6 to 11 achieve non-obese status. Separately, a PLOS One study reported that smartwatches substantially overstate energy expenditure during workouts, with errors magnified in individuals carrying higher body fat.
The hair-loss association could prompt men with a family history of pattern baldness to weigh cosmetic risks against metabolic benefits when starting GLP-1 therapy. Meanwhile, the pediatric trial results may expand treatment options for childhood obesity, potentially influencing clinical guidelines and insurance coverage. Widespread reliance on fitness trackers could lead users to overestimate caloric deficits, possibly undermining weight-management efforts if they adjust intake based on inaccurate data.
