Caroline Bienstock, who led Carlin Music as president and CEO for decades, died on Sept. 1 in New York after a long illness. She oversaw the company's catalog of classic songs including 'What a Wonderful World' and 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' until its sale to Round Hill Music in 2017. She was 68.
Bienstock's professional path began in law and investment banking before she joined Carlin in the late 1980s. She advanced to chief financial and operating roles by 1993, and took over as president in 1998, steering the firm's growth through targeted catalog purchases.
The catalog she oversaw was immense, featuring over 80,000 titles and thousands of songwriters across multiple global offices. She approached these assets with a clear-eyed business focus, famously stating that decisions had to be made without nostalgia or sentiment.
