Japan rejects plan to recruit foreign nationals to address shrinking Self-Defence Forces

The rejected proposal originated from a September 2 report by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, compiled by senior former defence officials and military leaders. Defence Minister Koizumi formally dismissed the idea on Friday, acknowledging demographic pressures while pivoting to alternative measures.
The government's substitute strategy centers on improving service member benefits, supporting veterans, and leveraging AI to compensate for manpower deficits. A national security adviser noted that all SDF branches currently face staffing and retention difficulties, while public sentiment remains firmly against immigration, contrasting with nations like Britain that recruit from Commonwealth countries.
This decision could place increasing strain on existing SDF personnel as the population ages, potentially worsening retention challenges and operational readiness.
