Windows 11 introduces age-range detection APIs for apps without revealing birthdates

Microsoft is rolling out new Windows Age APIs that let applications determine if a user falls into age brackets like under 10, 13-15, or 18+, using Microsoft account data without exposing exact birth dates. Developers can call functions to retrieve age ranges and verify whether an age has been officially confirmed, enabling automatic adjustments to features and safeguards for younger users. The APIs are now available to Windows Insiders and will soon reach all users, with Microsoft also expanding its age verification service to more regions.
The new toolkit distinguishes between self-reported ages and officially confirmed ones through a dedicated status check. Developers can query specific brackets—such as 10-12 or 16-17—to tailor experiences, while the underlying system relies on existing Microsoft account metadata rather than storing or transmitting birthdates.
The feature integrates with Microsoft's broader verification service, which already operates in several international markets and is slated for expansion. Additionally, the company is highlighting parental control options during initial setup in certain regions, and the API suite is currently accessible to testers before a wider public deployment.
This shift could significantly streamline how developers implement child safety measures, potentially reducing the burden on parents to configure each app separately. However, centralizing age signals within a single operating system may also concentrate sensitive demographic data, raising questions about how securely that information is handled across third-party applications. For minors, it could mean more consistent safeguards, while adults might see fewer age-gating prompts, though the reliance on Microsoft accounts could exclude users without them.
