Hong Kong's pioneer astronaut conducts live educational broadcast from orbit
Lai Ka-ying, Hong Kong's first astronaut, along with two crewmates, conducted a live lesson from space for students at her former school. The 90-minute session was broadcast to campuses across Hong Kong and Macau. Chief Executive John Lee urged young people to look up to astronauts as role models.
The Shenzhou-23 crew consists of Lai Ka-ying, Colonel Zhu Yangzhu, and Zhang Zhiyuan. Their "Tiangong Class" took place at Lai's former school, Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College, featuring in-orbit demonstrations and a question-and-answer segment.
The event was organized by the Hong Kong and Macau administrations with the China Manned Space Agency. Before the live link, academics from three local universities presented space-related projects. Chief Executive John Lee referenced a 2023 space delegation visit as having inspired national pride.
This broadcast could inspire Hong Kong and Macau students by providing direct exposure to space science, potentially boosting local interest in STEM careers. It may also strengthen a sense of national identity among the youth, as officials frame the mission as a collective achievement.
