Israeli politics: Left-right labels reflect views on Palestinians, not economics
In Israel, the traditional left-right spectrum is defined less by economic policy than by attitudes toward Palestinian statehood, occupation, and Jewish sovereignty. While economic and social issues exist, they often cut across the main camps. The divide has shifted from Labor Zionism versus Revisionism to a focus on territories and security.
The political spectrum's historical foundation rested on competing visions: Labor Zionism championed collective institutions and state-led growth, while Revisionist ideology prioritized national sovereignty and later embraced market principles. However, the 1967 war and the subsequent Oslo process reoriented these traditional alliances around territorial questions.
Escalating violence, particularly the second Intifada and the 2005 Gaza disengagement, eroded public support for compromise among Jewish voters. The October 7, 2023 attacks further entrenched security and Jewish identity as the primary political lenses, solidifying a right-wing bloc that views settlements as strategic assets and rejects full Palestinian sovereignty.
This redefinition of political labels could deepen the disconnect between Israeli voters and international observers, who may misread domestic debates through a Western economic lens. For Palestinian citizens and residents of the occupied territories, the consolidation of a security-first right may further constrain prospects for negotiated statehood. Conversely, it could galvanize a smaller, more focused left-wing opposition, potentially reshaping coalition dynamics and the long-term trajectory of the conflict.
