Russian drone strike on Ukraine-Moldova border kills two
A Russian drone attack on the Starokozache border crossing in Odesa region killed two civilians and injured three others, temporarily halting traffic. The attack also caused a large fire. Separately, Russian forces targeted Kyiv overnight, causing fires but no casualties.
The overnight assault extended beyond the border crossing, as Russian forces also struck Kyiv, hitting a 16-storey building and a facility linked to drone production, though the capital reported no casualties. Attacks on the Mykolaiv region damaged port and transport infrastructure, resulting in one death and several injuries.
These strikes followed a brief pause in Moscow's air campaign during a visit by US peace negotiators. In a reciprocal action, Ukrainian drones targeted the Russian port of Novorossiysk, killing four people and reportedly damaging military vessels, including missile carriers, at a naval base there.
This escalation could disrupt cross-border commerce and civilian movement between Ukraine and Moldova, potentially affecting refugees and local supply chains. The renewed strikes on Kyiv and other regions may further strain civilian morale and essential services. Conversely, Ukrainian attacks on Novorossiysk could impact Russian oil and grain export logistics, possibly influencing global commodity prices. Such tit-for-tat violence may also complicate diplomatic efforts to restart meaningful peace talks.
