China advances multi-domain drone swarm integration

China Electronics Technology Group Corporation's research institute says drone swarms are an intelligent, distributed combat system, not just many drones flying together. The country aims to coordinate different uncrewed platforms across air, land, and sea domains. Field tests have shown swarms can autonomously reconfigure and continue missions under extreme conditions.
The state-owned developer clarified that its swarm systems function as a cohesive, decentralized network rather than a simple collection of aircraft. This architecture allows individual units to communicate and make autonomous choices, thereby generating collective combat power.
Recent demonstrations highlighted a single operator managing up to 200 drones. Furthermore, rigorous field testing confirmed that these formations can self-heal network gaps and maintain operational integrity despite losing members, facing communication blackouts, or enduring heavy electronic jamming. Ongoing research focuses on ensuring mixed-platform swarms survive extended missions in highly contested zones.
The integration of multi-domain drone swarms could significantly alter future military engagements, potentially shifting the balance toward automated, distributed warfare. Defense planners in other nations may feel pressure to accelerate their own counter-swarm and autonomous systems.
