Modder builds never-released RTX 3070 Ti with 16GB using GDDR6 swap

A modder combined an RTX 3070 PCB with a 3070 Ti GPU and swapped GDDR6 chips to achieve 16GB VRAM, requiring memory strap reconfiguration. The card now works with full memory pool.
The modder meticulously swapped the original Samsung 8Gb memory chips for 16Gb variants, then used a BIOS reader tool to identify and solder the necessary memory strap adjustments. This reconfiguration allowed the MATS diagnostic tool to correctly detect the entire 16GB pool without errors.
Performance testing involved running a local language model and Call of Duty: Warzone, which consumed over 13GB of VRAM on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D system without instability. However, a Unigine Superposition score of 5,367 fell below typical 3070 Ti results, reflecting the lower bandwidth of GDDR6 compared to the stock GDDR6X.
This DIY project could inspire hobbyists to attempt similar VRAM upgrades on older graphics cards, potentially extending their useful lifespan for memory-intensive tasks like AI workloads. However, the significant bandwidth penalty and complex soldering requirements may deter most users, who could instead opt for newer, more efficient models with native 16GB support. This highlights a growing divide between niche hardware tinkering and practical consumer purchasing decisions.
