Patagonia's cold climate and energy attract hyperscalers for AI data centers

Patagonia's glaciers and cheap energy are drawing interest from Amazon, Google, and OpenAI for data centers, but fiber connectivity and political stability remain challenges.
The region's 17,300 glaciers provide natural cooling, lowering the power needed for server thermals. Energy options include hydroelectric, wind, and shale gas, with some operators adding solar. However, high-speed fiber connectivity remains scarce, and the upcoming presidential election introduces political uncertainty that could affect long-term commitments.
Specific projects are already moving forward. OpenAI has confirmed a $25 billion, 500MW clean energy facility. Poland's Green Capital is planning a $3 billion, 300MW site, while U.S.-based FlexDomes is starting a 120MW phase. Despite these plans, potential complications with indigenous community land rights and the current absence of public backlash present a mixed social landscape.
This development could significantly reshape Argentina's economic landscape, potentially bringing substantial investment and employment to Patagonia. However, it may also strain local infrastructure and energy grids, while the upcoming election could alter the regulatory environment. Indigenous communities might face land-use conflicts, and the region's transition into a tech hub could create social tensions if benefits are not equitably distributed.
