Semaglutide linked to fewer respiratory emergencies in real-world data

A large UK-based study found that semaglutide users experienced nearly 40% fewer asthma attacks and about 20% fewer COPD exacerbations compared to those on sulfonylureas. The findings suggest anti-inflammatory effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists, but clinical trials are required to confirm causality.
The research, presented at a major European respiratory conference, involved analyzing UK electronic health records across four separate cohorts of roughly 20,000 to 22,000 patients each. The comparison focused on individuals initiating either a GLP-1 receptor agonist or a sulfonylurea.
While several GLP-1 drugs showed respiratory benefits, semaglutide demonstrated the most pronounced association. The investigators explicitly caution that these observational results do not justify prescribing the medication for lung conditions alone, emphasizing that randomized controlled trials are essential to establish a causal link.
If confirmed by clinical trials, this association could reshape care for millions with both metabolic and respiratory conditions. Patients already taking semaglutide for diabetes or obesity may experience fewer acute respiratory events, potentially reducing hospitalizations and healthcare burdens. However, the observational nature of the data means causality remains unproven. Physicians may become more attentive to lung health when prescribing these drugs, but they should not expand usage solely for asthma or COPD until rigorous trials validate these preliminary signals.
