FDA Appoints Permanent Leaders for Drug and Vaccine Centers
The Trump administration has permanently filled four senior FDA positions, including directors for the centers on drugs, vaccines, and tobacco. Michael Davis, MD, PhD, will lead the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, while Karim Mikhail takes over the vaccines center. These appointments aim to stabilize the agency after months of controversy and high-profile departures.
Davis previously worked in the FDA's psychiatric drug division before moving to a nonprofit pursuing psychedelic treatments. His permanent role will oversee evaluations of psilocybin and MDMA, which the administration wants reviewed faster.
These appointments come after the departures of Commissioner Makary and vaccine chief Prasad, amid recent approvals of new nicotine products. A separate AI and technology oversight post was also established.
Permanent leadership could reduce uncertainty for pharmaceutical companies and clinicians awaiting regulatory decisions.
