Legal AI Startup Harvey Raises $550M at $15.5B Valuation

Harvey, a legal AI company, raised $550 million at a $15.5 billion valuation, nearly doubling its valuation in nine months. The round was co-led by Diffusion and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company recently launched its own in-house model, Harvey Tenet, built on open-weight technology, signaling a shift away from proprietary frontier AI labs.
The startup's valuation trajectory accelerated sharply, moving from $8 billion in December to $11 billion in March, and now $15.5 billion. Total funding exceeds $1.55 billion across at least eight priced rounds since 2023, with the latest possibly serving as a Series F.
Harvey recently debuted its Tenet model, built on open-weight Kimi K3 and post-trained with legal data through Fireworks. By encouraging clients to adopt open-weight systems, the company demonstrates how the legal sector can reduce reliance on proprietary frontier AI providers.
This rapid valuation growth could signal a broader shift toward specialized vertical AI models gaining investor confidence over general-purpose ones. Law firms and corporate legal departments may benefit from greater data control and lower dependency on external labs, potentially reshaping procurement strategies. However, intensifying competition from rivals like Legora and Anthropic could pressure pricing and innovation, ultimately affecting how legal professionals access and deploy AI tools.
