OWN Documentary 'We Belong Here' Chronicles Team Dream's Journey
The documentary "We Belong Here: The Story of Team Dream" will premiere on the Oprah Winfrey Network on September 26. It tells the story of the first all-Black women's professional volleyball team, led by former Texas star Haley Eckerman, which went undefeated and won a tournament. The film uses the athletes' own voices without an external narrator.
The squad, guided by former University of Texas standout Haley Eckerman, achieved a perfect 7-0 record to claim the tournament title. Despite having minimal preparation time, they showcased resilience, notably overcoming two-set deficits in both the semifinal and final matches against Team Freedom and Hoosier Exterminators, respectively.
The film, produced by Bunim/Murray Productions, previously screened at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival. It is scheduled to air on the Oprah Winfrey Network on September 26 at 9 p.m. ET, utilizing only the athletes' own accounts to tell their story.
By centering the athletes' own voices, this documentary could broaden representation in a sport where Black women have historically been underrepresented. It may inspire young viewers of color to pursue volleyball, while also prompting sports organizations to reconsider recruitment and support structures. The film's focus on overcoming systemic barriers could foster greater empathy and a stronger sense of community among general audiences, potentially influencing how future teams are built and celebrated.
