UBS to Cease Fund Distribution on China Wealth Platform

UBS will shut down its fund-distribution business on its mainland China wealth-management platform, UBS Fund Distribution (Shenzhen), at the end of September. The move is part of a business integration plan amid intense competition from online rivals. UBS said it remains committed to China and will continue to invest strategically.
The Swiss bank's Shenzhen-based subsidiary, UBS Fund Distribution, will halt fund subscriptions and switching operations by the end of September. This closure follows reports that its WE.UBS wealth-management app encountered operational difficulties.
The restructuring, initiated several months ago, is driven by competitive pressure from digital-first fund sellers in the mainland market. While client redemptions continue, roughly 200 staff positions are impacted, with some employees potentially relocating to other UBS divisions. The bank maintains its long-term strategic focus on China.
The withdrawal of a major foreign bank from a specific digital wealth channel could signal shifting dynamics in China's retail investment landscape. Local investors may face fewer options for foreign-managed fund products through this particular route, potentially pushing them toward domestic online platforms. The affected employees could experience career transitions, though UBS's broader commitment suggests a consolidation rather than a full retreat. This move may also prompt other international firms to reassess their digital distribution strategies in a highly competitive market.
