August 2026 Equals Previous Heat Record, According to EU Climate Service

The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that August 2026's global surface air temperature averaged 16.96°C, tying the record set in July 2023. This value is 1.65°C above preindustrial levels, exceeding the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C threshold. Ocean temperatures also reached record highs, and scientists attribute the extreme heat to a combination of El Niño conditions and human-induced climate change.
The August average of 16.96°C statistically aligns with the July 2023 benchmark, placing it 1.65°C above pre-industrial levels. This surpasses the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C target, a limit the UN now considers consistently exceedable. Additionally, global ocean temperatures matched their previous all-time high from March 2024.
The extreme conditions are attributed to a developing El Niño interacting with ongoing fossil fuel emissions. Scientists anticipate that this El Niño will likely make 2027 the warmest year on record, underscoring a profound shift from the climate of five decades ago.
Communities facing wildfires, floods, and coastal erosion could experience heightened strain as temperatures consistently exceed the 1.5°C threshold. Warmer oceans may disrupt marine ecosystems and fisheries, affecting food security and coastal economies.
