Apple rolls out family-tier AppleCare plan with six-person coverage
Apple introduced a new AppleCare One Family plan at its iPhone launch event, priced at $50 per month. The plan covers all eligible devices for up to six family members, automatically including newly purchased products tied to their Apple IDs. It includes theft and loss coverage limited to six claims per year, along with benefits like free battery replacement and accidental damage repairs.
The subscription was announced during the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 event. To enroll, users must first establish a Family Sharing group, which allows invitations for up to five additional members. The subscription is then activated through the device's settings menu under AppleCare & Warranty.
Coverage automatically includes future purchases tied to members' Apple IDs, while older eligible devices can be manually added. The plan caps theft and loss claims at six annually, whereas standard single-device coverage allows two claims and the individual multi-device tier permits three. Benefits include complimentary battery swaps and repairs for accidental screen or back glass damage.
This tiered subscription could streamline warranty management for larger households, potentially reducing administrative burdens. Bundling coverage may encourage families to repair older devices instead of replacing them, extending product lifespans. However, the annual six-claim limit could create pressure for active users, as a single incident might exhaust one member's share. This model may shift consumer expectations toward recurring service fees rather than one-time purchases, influencing long-term ownership costs.
