Nintendo Switch 2 adds variable refresh rate support for docked TV play

Nintendo has released a firmware update that enables variable refresh rate (VRR) when the Switch 2 is docked to a TV, a feature initially promised but later dropped. VRR matches the display's refresh rate to the game's frame rate, reducing tearing and judder. The update also includes a handheld boost toggle and system transfer capabilities.
The feature was initially promised for both handheld and TV modes, but Nintendo later removed docked VRR from its official specifications, leaving only the handheld OLED display supported. This new firmware restores the TV capability, though it requires a separate update to the Switch 2 Dock hardware itself, suggesting a complex technical integration that was previously abandoned.
The update also introduces a handheld performance toggle, an upgraded Mii editor, and full system migration tools. This release follows a Direct event that unveiled Metroid Ravenous and a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, alongside a 40th-anniversary Zelda-themed console launching next month.
This update could significantly improve visual smoothness for Switch 2 owners playing on televisions, potentially reducing motion artifacts in fast-paced games. It may also help Nintendo align its technical capabilities with rival platforms like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The added system transfer and boost features could enhance user convenience and device longevity, potentially influencing consumer satisfaction and purchase decisions for the upcoming themed hardware.
