China accuses Japan of militarizing space with AI satellite plans
Chinese state media has warned that Japan's plan to develop AI-equipped tactical satellites would boost its long-range offensive strike capabilities and pose a serious threat. The satellites would process surveillance intelligence in orbit to speed up targeting decisions and strengthen missile guidance. Japan's defense ministry aims to build a prototype with domestic companies and conduct space launches from the 2030s.
Traditional reconnaissance satellites transmit raw imagery to Earth for processing. Japan's proposed system would instead use AI to analyze data collected from other satellites directly in orbit, sending only the resulting insights to reduce communication delays. Funding for this initiative is included in Japan's draft 2027 defense budget, though the specific amount remains undisclosed.
