Record Floating Seaweed Belt Sparks Debate Over Its Dual Role in Ocean Life
A massive sargassum bloom spanning 5,500 miles from West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico reached a record 38 million metric tons this summer, piling up on beaches and harming coastal ecosystems. The decomposing weed releases toxic gases, blocks fishing gear, and smothers coral reefs, yet scientists also find it shelters a vast array of marine creatures. This has led some researchers to argue for protecting parts of the floating algae even as it wreaks havoc on tourism and coastal communities.
The floating mats can reach twenty feet thick and weigh more than the entire US population. When stranded, they emit hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, sickening thousands of Caribbean residents, while arsenic leaching from decaying weed threatens drinking water. The masses also block boat engines and trap sea turtle hatchlings.
Historically limited to the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda, the weed expanded southward in 2011 after unusual North Atlantic Oscillation winds stirred up deep nutrients. This transformed the region into a vast floating habitat and carbon store, sheltering diverse marine life.
The bloom's dual nature could force coastal nations to balance ecological preservation against immediate economic and health crises. Tourism-dependent regions may face prolonged revenue losses, while fishing communities could see livelihoods disrupted. Conversely, recognizing the belt as a marine habitat may lead to new management strategies, potentially shifting cleanup efforts toward protecting offshore ecosystems while mitigating onshore damage.
