Enthusiasts Rebuild RTX 5090 with Legacy 8-Pin Power Connectors, Pushing It to 900W

TecLab modders replaced the dual 16-pin connectors on a Galax RTX 5090 with three 8-pin PCIe connectors, soldering them directly to the PCB. The modified card drew over 120A and reached 3,400 MHz at 900W, without any software or BIOS tweaks. Testing with fewer cables still yielded high clock speeds, demonstrating the old connector's capability under extreme loads.
The modification involved stripping the Galax card down to its bare circuit board and attaching three legacy 8-pin plugs directly to the voltage regulators. Heavy-gauge wiring was used, and the sense pins were re-routed to bypass the card's default power ceiling. A custom liquid cooling loop was employed to manage the extreme heat.
Testing showed the old standard's resilience, as even a single 8-pin cable sustained a 3,100 MHz clock speed. This contrasts with ongoing reliability concerns surrounding the newer 16-pin standard, which has faced melting issues across several high-end GPU models from both Nvidia and AMD.
This experiment could influence how enthusiasts and manufacturers approach GPU power delivery. If the legacy 8-pin connector proves reliable at extreme wattages, it may reduce consumer anxiety about melting connectors, potentially leading to a resurgence of older standards in custom builds. However, the broader industry might continue standardizing on 16-pin designs for space and efficiency, meaning this mod could remain a niche solution for extreme overclockers rather than a mainstream shift.
