Minecraft Meetup Led to Cybercrime Ring; Ringleader Pleads Guilty to Racketeering

Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singaporean, has pleaded guilty to racketeering for his role in a cybercrime gang that stole and laundered hundreds of millions in cryptocurrency. The gang, which reportedly formed after real-life meetups among Minecraft players, targeted high-net-worth individuals and used social engineering and technical tricks to access accounts. Court documents describe lavish spending on exotic cars, nightclub bills, and private jets, with one single theft netting $245 million.
The criminal enterprise comprised twelve members and operated for approximately two years. Their methods involved identifying wealthy cryptocurrency investors, executing social engineering schemes, and manipulating technology to generate account access alerts on victims' devices. When digital tactics proved insufficient, the group resorted to physical break-ins, with member Marlon Ferro serving as a backup for such operations before receiving a 6.5-year sentence in May.
Lam was apprehended in September 2024, and the remaining suspects surrendered by May 2025. The stolen funds financed a collection of 31 exotic vehicles, private jet travel, and nightclub tabs reaching half a million dollars. A status hearing is scheduled for December 8, where Lam faces a maximum penalty of 20 years.
This case could signal a shift in how law enforcement tackles crypto-related crime, using traditional racketeering statutes to dismantle international networks. High-net-worth individuals may face increased pressure to adopt stronger authentication methods, while the broader crypto community could see heightened regulatory scrutiny.
