Swarmer to acquire Ukrainian UGV maker Ratel Robotics for up to $224M
Swarmer Inc. has signed an agreement to acquire Ratel Robotics, a Ukrainian manufacturer of uncrewed ground vehicles, for up to $224 million. The deal aims to combine Swarmer's autonomy software with Ratel's battle-tested platforms to create interoperable robotic systems for defense. Swarmer, founded in 2023, has already deployed its swarm coordination technology in combat operations in Ukraine since April 2024.
Swarmer, founded in 2023 and based in Austin, Texas, develops software enabling a single operator to coordinate hundreds of autonomous units. Its technology has been deployed in Ukraine since April 2024, completing over 100,000 combat missions and generating extensive data to refine its machine-learning models. The company maintains teams in Ukraine, Poland, and Estonia.
Ratel Robotics, headquartered in Kyiv, produces UGVs for logistics, casualty evacuation, reconnaissance, de-mining, and strikes. The firm holds NATO quality certifications and has secured $86 million in contracts this year, with its vehicles accounting for roughly 37% of Ukraine's recent UGV procurement spending. Existing contracts will remain unaffected by the acquisition.
This merger could reshape defense procurement by prioritizing software-driven, interoperable robotic fleets over single-purpose hardware. For soldiers, greater reliance on UGVs may reduce exposure to dangerous missions, while for civilians, it could alter the dynamics of conflict zones. Defense contractors may face pressure to adopt vendor-agnostic systems. However, increased autonomy in military operations could also raise concerns about accountability and decision-making in lethal scenarios, affecting both military personnel and broader society.
