Research on dogs with narcolepsy led Dr. Emmanuel Mignot to identify the brain chemical orexin, which promotes wakefulness. This work, independently confirmed by another scientist, reshaped understanding of sleep disorders and earned a prestigious Lasker Award. The findings have since informed new treatments for narcolepsy and insomnia.
Mignot's pursuit of narcolepsy stemmed from its clinical neglect, as the condition affects roughly one in three thousand people yet was frequently missed by neurologists.
